Brownstone Copse

Thick woodland surrounds you the moment you step into Brownstone Copse - ancient oaks and dense undergrowth that feels properly removed from the rest of Devon. It's the sort of forest that makes you slow down without meaning to, the kind where you lose track of time within five minutes of arriving.

The Copse sits just outside Crediton, making it an easy reach if you're staying at Yeatheridge Farm Caravan Park nearby. For walkers, this is solid terrain - footpaths wind through the trees, though the ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. The woodland floor is carpeted with ferns and moss, and in spring the birdsong is relentless in the best possible way.

It's not a destination that demands hours - most people spend forty minutes to an hour moving through at a proper pace. Kids will enjoy spotting whatever wildlife ventures close enough, though it's not the sort of place for a full day out unless you're genuinely into forestry or bird watching.

What makes it work is the genuine quiet. No café, no visitor facilities that we could find, just trees and the sound of a working woodland. Go mid-week if you want solitude. It's the type of place that works beautifully as a morning before heading to bigger attractions nearby, not as your main event. Real woodland, nothing softened for tourism.
