Brungerley Park Clitheroe

The River Ribble winds through this bit of Lancashire countryside like it owns the place, and Brungerley Park sits right alongside it just outside Clitheroe. It's a proper nature reserve - the kind where you actually see things if you keep your eyes open. Kingfishers, if you're lucky. Dragonflies skimming the water in summer. The park itself is small and unassuming, which means it doesn't get rammed with day-trippers.

Walkers will find this one worth the trip. The riverside path is straightforward, nothing technical, and the grassland opens up nicely in places. You're looking at maybe an hour if you potter about, longer if you're into birds or want to sit and watch the water. The setting's genuinely lovely - proper Ribble Valley, with the hills rising up beyond. It's free to visit, and there's no faffing about with gates or opening hours.

Bring binoculars if you're serious about wildlife spotting. Children won't get bored as long as they like messing about by water and looking for things moving in the vegetation. It's not a "must do something" kind of place - it's somewhere to breathe and notice the detail.

If you're staying at one of the local caravan parks - Clitheroe Camping and Caravanning Club Site is barely over a mile away - this works perfectly as a morning walk before heading into Clitheroe town or tackling something bigger in the valley. Combine it with Pendle Hill on a clearer day if you want more of a challenge.
