Bryn Fawnog

The walk up Bryn Fawnog from Welshpool side is straightforward enough - about an hour if you're not dawdling, longer if you want to properly admire the Powys landscape rolling away beneath you. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but that's rather the point. No crowds, no car park chaos, just you and the moorland and a view that stretches toward the Brecon Beacons on a clear day.

What makes it worth the trip is the walk itself more than any dramatic summit. The approach from Welshpool takes you through proper countryside - hedgerows, the occasional farm gate, patches of woodland that feel genuinely remote despite being minutes from town. The actual hilltop offers decent views across Mid Wales without being so lofty that it demands fitness you don't possess.

This is ideal territory for walkers who want a proper outing without needing to take out a second mortgage on shin paste. Families with older kids will manage it fine in an afternoon. History types won't find much at the summit itself, but the surrounding area has enough archaeology and old settlements to poke around. If you're camping at Pandy Camping or Riverbend Caravan Park nearby, it makes a cracking half-day excursion - nothing too taxing after a lazy morning.

Allow two to three hours for the round trip if you want to sit about at the top. Go when the weather looks settled; exposed moorland can shift fast. Free to walk, naturally. Best visited as part of a wider Welshpool exploration rather than as a standalone destination.
