About Bryn Tryfan

The two rocky teeth that jut from Bryn Tryfan's summit are visible from miles away - that's your first clue this isn't going to be a gentle stroll. At 917 metres, it's not Snowdon, but the final push to the top involves proper scrambling, and those distinctive twin peaks, known as Adam and Eve, require a bit of nerve to traverse.

The walk itself takes most people four to five hours from the Ogwen Valley car park. The early sections wind through moorland and become progressively more technical as you climb, with scrambling chains fixed to the rockier sections. The views across the Snowdonia ridges are genuinely outstanding - on a clear day you're looking south across the whole range.

This is firmly a peak for walkers with some experience under their belt. You need decent boots, a head for heights, and the ability to move confidently on steep rock. Families with young children should probably give it a miss; older teens who've done a bit of hill walking will relish it.

The real drama happens at the top. Standing between Adam and Eve and looking out towards the Menai Strait and Anglesey beyond - that's the moment you understand why people queue up to do this climb. It's not the highest mountain in Wales by a long chalk, but it's one of the sharpest and most rewarding.

Base yourself at one of the Llanberis or Ogwen Bank sites if you're planning a proper walking holiday. Bryn Tryfan works perfectly as a day out from Caernarfon too, though you'll want an early start.
