Buck Hill

The walk up Buck Hill takes less than an hour from Clitheroe, and the views across the Ribble Valley make it worth every step. It's not particularly high - around 300 metres - but what it lacks in altitude it makes up for in sharpness. On a clear day you can pick out Pendle Hill to the east and the Forest of Bowland rolling away beyond. The summit itself is properly exposed, so wind can be fierce, but that's part of the appeal.

This is a hill for walkers who want something substantive without committing to a full day out. The path is well-trodden and obvious enough, though it does get muddy after rain. Families with older children will manage fine - younger ones might find the final scramble tiresome. History types won't find much up there besides the views, but the surrounding area is thick with Lancastrian heritage.

If you're staying at one of the caravan parks near Clitheroe - Little Oakhurst or the Caravanning Club site are closest at just over 2 miles away - Buck Hill is a natural fit for an afternoon out. It breaks up a park-based holiday nicely. Pair it with a wander through Clitheroe itself afterwards, or push on to explore the wider Ribble Valley. Free to access, obviously. Go early if the weather looks decent; clouds roll in fast here, and there's nothing to see from the top if they do.
