Buckland Park Lake

The lake itself is calm and unremarkable until you realise you're looking at one of Surrey's quieter nature reserves, a proper haven for birdwatchers and anyone after a bit of peace without the crowds. Buckland Park Lake sits just outside Tadworth and works brilliantly as a half-hour detour when you're camping at one of the nearby parks - Betchworth Fort Park and Surrey Hills Park are both within walking distance if you're that way inclined.

What you get here is straightforward: a freshwater lake ringed by trees, decent paths for ambling about, and genuine wildlife value. Bring binoculars if you're serious about spotting things. Winter brings migrating birds, spring gets hectic with nesting activity, and summer's fine if you don't mind the occasional heron loitering about. Kids aged eight and up will probably find it tolerable for an hour, though there's no playground nonsense to occupy younger ones.

The whole experience is free and access seems unrestricted, though it's worth checking locally in Tadworth before you go - opening hours aren't widely advertised and you don't want to turn up to find gates locked. Paths are manageable year-round but can get boggy after rain. It's the sort of place that justifies a morning walk if you're staying at Merrywood Park or Norbury Park nearby, combining it with a proper loop through the Surrey Hills National Landscape beyond. Not dramatic, but genuinely useful for a nature reserve afternoon when the weather's cooperating.
