Buittle Castle

Fragments of weathered sandstone walls mark the spot where the powerful Balliol family once ruled their Scottish domains. Buittle Castle sits on a raised mound just outside Dalbeattie, offering visitors the chance to wander among the atmospheric ruins of what was once one of Dumfries and Galloway's most important medieval strongholds.

Built in the 13th century by John Balliol - yes, the same chap who became King of Scotland - the castle controlled the surrounding countryside and River Urr valley. What remains today isn't particularly extensive, but history buffs will appreciate the significance of standing where Scottish royalty once held court.

The ruins are freely accessible and make for a pleasant half-hour stop. Kids might need their imagination fired up with tales of medieval knights and power struggles to stay engaged, but the grassy mound is perfect for a picnic if the weather's decent.

From holiday parks like Kippford View or Castle Point Caravan and Camping Site, it's an easy drive worth combining with a trip to nearby Dalbeattie or the Solway coast. The views across the surrounding farmland are lovely enough, though you're not looking at Scotland's most dramatic castle remains.
