Bull Island

A proper woodland walk along the Coln River near Fairford, Bull Island isn't crowded with day-trippers despite being only minutes from the town. The island itself is small - you're not talking about a sprawling forest trek - but the riverbank paths wind through mixed woodland with decent open views across the water. Locals come here to clear their heads rather than tick off a checklist.

Walkers will appreciate the flat terrain and the chance to spot waterfowl, though don't expect dramatic scenery. It's the sort of place where you can be genuinely alone on a Wednesday afternoon, which counts for something. The paths are straightforward enough for families with younger kids, though it's muddy after rain so proper footwear matters. You're looking at 45 minutes to an hour for a comfortable loop without rushing.

If you're staying at Great Farm just down the road - and it's worth the stay for its five-star rating - Bull Island makes a cracking morning outing before heading elsewhere. Second Chance Touring Park is also close by if you're bringing a caravan. The walk costs nothing and requires no booking, which means you can pop over on a whim if the weather turns out decent.

Best visited in autumn when the woodland gets some proper colour, though spring brings nesting birds if you're into that sort of thing. It won't be the highlight of a Gloucestershire trip, but it's a solid hour away from screens and the stuff that winds you up.
