Bull Shed Plantation

The woodland at Bull Shed Plantation, just outside Preston, is a proper working forest rather than a polished visitor attraction. You won't find gift shops or interpretation boards here - it's the real thing, and that's exactly what makes it worth seeking out.

The plantation offers a decent walk through mixed woodland, with paths that wind through mature trees and younger growth sections. It's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think, which counts for something in Lancashire. The ground is usually soft underfoot, so proper boots help. Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushing - there's enough to explore without it becoming an epic undertaking.

Walkers will find the most value here. Families with younger children might manage an hour or so before restlessness sets in, but there's no playground or circular "attraction" to anchor a visit. Serious hikers and bird watchers often make better use of the space, especially early morning or dusk when wildlife is more active.

If you're staying at Gibsons Barn Caravan Park or Moss Wood Caravan Park, both within a few miles, Bull Shed Plantation makes a morning outing rather than a full-day destination. It works well as part of a wider Preston-area forest tour. Being a working plantation means checking conditions before you go - muddy seasons can make paths heavy going.
