Bullscroft Spring

A woodland spring tucked away in the Buckinghamshire countryside near Rickmansworth - the kind of place locals know about and visitors stumble upon by accident. The water itself is the main draw: clear, cold, and genuinely refreshing if you're brave enough to wade in on a hot day. The surrounding forest offers decent walking, nothing too taxing, with paths that loop through beech and oak woodland.

It's worth the detour if you're already in the area, particularly if you've got children who need a break from structured attractions. Kids tend to find the spring itself fascinating - there's something about fresh water emerging from the ground that holds their attention longer than you'd expect. The walk itself takes about an hour at a gentle pace, though you can make it shorter depending on which trails you pick.

Go on a weekday morning if you can. Weekends bring the Rickmansworth crowd, and the woodland loses some of its quietness. Spring and early summer are best - the water's coldest then, the woodland floor's green, and you won't be wading through mud. Free to visit, as far as anyone can tell, and no facilities that I'm aware of, so bring water of your own.
