Burnby Hall Museum

Walk through rooms crammed with stuff he picked up from his travels - Egyptian artefacts, Japanese pieces, taxidermy that's either fascinating or deeply unsettling depending on your tolerance for dead animals under glass. It's the sort of place where you turn a corner and find a random suit of armour or a collection of old surgical instruments. Not massive, so you're looking at 90 minutes maximum, probably less if Victorian clutter doesn't grab you.

The real draw here is the gardens outside, which are genuinely worth the visit - two lakes, water lilies, and a Japanese garden that actually feels considered rather than thrown together. The museum works better if you're already coming to see the grounds. History types and curiosity collectors will spend longer poking around the display cases, but families with young kids might find it a bit dull unless they're into that sort of thing.
