Burscough Priory

You'll find crumbling red sandstone walls rising unexpectedly from flat Lancashire countryside just outside Burscough village. Burscough Priory is what's left of a 12th-century Augustinian monastery - think fallen archways, tumbled stones, and enough atmospheric silence to make you forget you're five minutes from a main road.

There's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards, and no entrance fee - it's just open ground with public access. That's either brilliant or disappointing depending on your mood. Go on a quiet weekday if you want the place to yourself; weekends can get a bit trampled. The best light hits late afternoon when the low sun picks out the masonry detail.

It won't anchor a day trip on its own, but it's well worth twenty minutes of your time if you're passing through.
