Burying The Hatchet

The actual story behind this site is rather good, even if the name alone conjures up Wild West showdowns. Back in 1645, during the English Civil War, local Roundhead and Cavalier forces called a temporary truce near Milton Keynes - a proper rarity given how bitter things had become. They literally buried their weapons as a symbol of peace, hence the name. It's one of those quiet historical markers that doesn't shout about itself but speaks volumes about a moment when cooler heads prevailed.

Today there's not much to see on the ground - you're really here for the story and the small monument marking where it happened. History buffs will find it worthwhile, particularly those interested in the Civil War period and local Northamptonshire heritage. It's not a destination that'll occupy a full afternoon, mind you. Allow twenty minutes, maybe thirty if you're the type to read everything and take photos.

The location works well if you're based at one of the nearby parks - Gullivers Campsite and Adventurer's Village are both less than a mile away, making this an easy morning walk or quick stop between activities. Cosgrove Park, a bit further out, would also make it a reasonable leg-stretch during a holiday. Best visited when the weather's decent since there's minimal shelter, and frankly, standing about reading a plaque loses its charm in the rain. Worth the detour if you're already in the area, but don't make a special trip.
