Bushy Wood

The woodland around Ingatestone offers a proper escape if you're after something quieter than the usual tourist trail. Bushy Wood sits on the eastern edge, all dense undergrowth and tall oaks, the kind of place where you'll actually hear birdsong instead of car engines. It's a working wood rather than a manicured nature reserve, so expect muddy paths and the occasional fallen branch blocking your way - bring decent boots.

Walkers will get the most from this. The trails meander through a mix of managed woodland and scrubland, good for a solid two-hour loop if you don't dawdle. It's not dramatically scenic - no viewpoints or dramatic clearings - but there's something meditative about it. Kids might enjoy it for an hour or so, though the lack of facilities and playgrounds means it's not a day-long destination for families.

The wood works well as a morning walk before heading to The Courts Campsite just six miles away, where you can properly settle in for a longer Essex break. Ingatestone itself is a commuter town with a train station and decent pubs, so you're not isolated. Access to Bushy Wood appears to be free, though parking details aren't always obvious - locals tend to use verge space on the nearby roads. Go on a weekday morning for maximum peace. It won't win awards for spectacle, but it's the sort of place people from London drive out to precisely because it feels properly rural.
