Butlers Shaw

Butlers Shaw is a proper woodland walk just outside Dorking - the sort of place you stumble upon when you're exploring the quieter corners of Sussex. It's a small forest, nothing vast, but the trees are thick enough that you feel genuinely tucked away from the world, even though civilization isn't far off.

The walk itself takes a couple of hours at a leisurely pace, winding through dense woodland with decent paths that hold up reasonably well after rain. You won't find dramatic views or dramatic anything, really - it's intimate rather than showy. The canopy closes in overhead, dappled light filters through, and it's genuinely peaceful. Good for people who want to stretch their legs without needing to navigate maps or worry about getting lost.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after the first half hour - there aren't viewpoints or clearings to aim for, just the walk itself. But teenagers and proper walkers will appreciate the simplicity of it. Bring decent shoes if it's been wet; the ground can get boggy in patches.

If you're based at Gatwick Caravan and Motorhome Club Campsite, Butlers Shaw makes a sensible morning excursion before heading elsewhere in the area. It's not the sort of place that justifies a whole day trip on its own, but paired with Dorking's shops and restaurants, or combined with other local walks, it fills a slot nicely.
