Buttercross

Winchester's Buttercross is one of those medieval structures that stops you mid-walk. It's a stone market cross, built in the 15th century, standing in the heart of the city with an almost defiant air - all buttresses and weathered carvings that tell you this place has seen centuries of haggling over produce and gossip.

What you're looking at is essentially a covered market shelter, the sort of thing that medieval towns relied on to keep their butter and other perishables somewhat protected during trading days. The open arcade underneath gave traders room to work, while the stone canopy above did what it could against Hampshire drizzle. The name's rather literal - it's where they sold butter.

Historically minded visitors will find it genuinely interesting. It's proper medieval fabric in a working town centre, not cordoned off or theatricalised. Families won't linger long - it takes five minutes to circle and absorb - but it's free and sits right near the cathedral and High Street, so it slots effortlessly into a Winchester morning.

The Buttercross works best as part of a larger Winchester wander. Hookpit Farm, just 3.4 miles out, gives you a base with real comfort (ratings suggest it's the pick of local parks), or Holden Farm 5.2 miles away if you want slightly more space. Neither camp requires you to abandon the city centre entirely, which matters if you're serious about the history. Winchester Morn Hill is closer but queues reflect its popularity.

Best visited early before the crowds. October through April, when the light's lower and footfall thins, it shows its age rather better.
