You'll find yourself walking beneath a cathedral of beech and oak just inland from Bridlington, where Butterfly Lane Plantation does exactly what its name suggests - it's a working forest that actually attracts butterflies, along with all manner of woodland life. The paths are straightforward and well-maintained, winding through dense woodland that feels properly removed from the coast despite being minutes away.

What makes it worth the trip is the genuine sense of escape. There's no tea shop, no visitor centre, no interpretation boards - just trees, air, and the occasional flash of movement in the undergrowth. Walkers will find it peaceful rather than spectacular, and that's the appeal. Families with younger children might find it a bit samey after 30 minutes unless they're genuinely into spotting wildlife, but teenagers who like a proper forest walk will get more from it.

The best time to visit is late spring through early autumn when the butterfly populations are actually about. Summer mornings tend to be quieter than afternoons. Allow an hour for a decent circuit depending on your pace - it's not a place to rush.

If you're staying at Flamborough Glamping or Haven Thornwick Bay, it's a logical half-day addition to your coastal break. It breaks up a holiday focused entirely on cliff walks and beach time, though it's not dramatic enough to be a destination on its own. Bring wellies if it's been wet - the woodland floor holds water.
