Caesar's Belt

A narrow ridge of beech woodland running along a chalk escarpment just outside Newbury - that's Caesar's Belt in a nutshell. It's proper woodland walking, the sort where you're threading through tall trees and the ground beneath your feet is soft with leaf litter. The ridge itself offers decent views across the Hampshire countryside if you pick your moment and find a gap in the canopy.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with young children might find it a bit underwhelming if they're expecting a destination rather than a walk - it's not a viewpoint with facilities, just forest. But for anyone wanting a decent leg-stretch from Newbury with minimal faffing about, it does the job well. The woodland has character and the chalk woodland habitat is genuine Hampshire.

The walk itself takes between 45 minutes and two hours depending on how far you venture along the ridge. No entrance fees that I can find, no visitor centre, no cafe - bring what you need. Best visited when the beech wood is in full leaf or autumn colour rather than winter when it's all a bit grey and exposed.

If you're glamping at Hollington Park nearby, this makes a straightforward morning walk before heading back for lunch. It slots nicely into a weekend exploring the North Wessex Downs - not spectacular enough to drive miles for, but absolutely worth the diversion if you're already in the area.
