Cainhoepark Wood

Ancient woodland south of Henlow that feels properly removed from the surrounding flatness. Cainhoepark Wood is a peaceful walk through mixed broadleaf trees, and on a quiet weekday you might have the paths to yourself. The canopy does decent work filtering the light, and there's enough habitat to spot woodland birds if you're paying attention. It's the sort of place where you can stretch your legs for an hour or so without it feeling forced.

Walkers will get more from this than day-trippers. There's no café or obvious focal point - no waterfall, no tower, no Instagram moment. What you get is genuinely undisturbed woodland, which for some people is exactly the point. Families with young children might find it a touch dull after 45 minutes unless they're into spotting insects or learning about tree types. The ground can be muddy, especially in winter, so proper boots matter.

Allow 60 to 90 minutes for a proper wander. If you're staying at Henlow Bridge Lakes, it's less than five miles away and makes a natural morning or afternoon break from a park holiday. The wood works best in spring when the bluebells come through, or in autumn when the light turns that particular shade of amber. Check conditions beforehand - it can be sodden after heavy rain, which rather defeats the purpose of a walk in the woods.
