Cairn O' Mount View

The drive up to Cairn O' Mount is half the experience. You'll wind through proper Highland scenery before hitting this elevated viewpoint that sits at around 1,500 feet, commanding views across Aberdeenshire that stretch for miles when the weather plays ball. On a clear day you can see all the way to the Cairngorms - genuinely breath-taking.

The vantage point itself is straightforward: a parking area and a short walk gets you to the cairn where a trig point marks the spot. What makes it worth the trip isn't any fancy infrastructure - there's none - but rather the sheer scale of what unfolds below. Rolling farmland, distant hills, and on good visibility days, enough landscape to make you understand why people spend money on postcards.

It's excellent for walkers tackling the Cairn O' Mount pass, and families with reasonable fitness levels will manage the approach without drama. Plan forty minutes to an hour if you're just stopping for views and photos. The parking is free, and there are no visitor facilities, so bring supplies if you're planning to linger.

Stay at Glen Dye Cabins and Cottages just 3.5 miles away and you've got an ideal base for exploring the area. Banchory, five miles south, has decent pubs and shops if you need them. Go midweek in spring or autumn when the light's golden and the crowds are thin. Winter can be magical too, though the road can get dodgy after snow.
