About Calder Holmes Play
The park itself centres on a small waterfall and a series of pools where the river slows enough to actually see the water rather than just hear it roaring. There's a footbridge crossing the Colden, and if you're feeling adventurous, the riverside path continues upwards into the moors beyond. Most people will spend 45 minutes to an hour here, paddling in the pools or just sitting on the rocks watching the water.
It's free and accessible year-round, though winter can turn the paths slippery and unpleasant. Spring's probably best - the water levels are decent without being dangerous, and the woodland canopy isn't so thick that it blocks out the light. Families with older kids will enjoy it more than toddlers; the paths aren't pram-friendly and there's nowhere flat to sit with a picnic.
Stay at Old Chamber Camping just down the valley and you're minutes away. It's genuinely worth combining with a wander around Hebden Bridge itself - grab lunch at one of the cafes, then head up here to walk it off. The Colden Valley has several walks branching off from the park if you want to make a proper afternoon of it.
