Caledonian Canal, Corpach Locks

The eight lock gates at Corpach stand like a staircase for ships, lifting vessels nearly 65 feet above sea level in a series of thunderous, water-churning moves that never gets old to watch. It's the western entrance to Thomas Telford's Caledonian Canal, that mad Victorian engineering project that connects the North Sea to the Atlantic and slices right through the Scottish Highlands. You can stand on the lockside for free and watch fishing boats, yachts, and the occasional tour barge work their way through - the whole process takes about thirty minutes per boat, which gives you time to get your head round the sheer scale of it. The visitor centre nearby has some decent info if you want the full history, but honestly, watching the locks operate is the thing. The water levels rise and fall with hydraulic precision, and if you time it right you'll see a boat ascending and descending at once. Fort William sits just across the water, and if you're staying at any of the nearby parks - Linnhe Lochside is closest at 1.6 miles - you've got a straightforward walk or short drive. Glen Nevis Caravan Park, 3 miles out, is excellent if you're planning a longer stay. Go early morning or late afternoon to dodge the tour groups. It's free, takes forty minutes to an hour, and works brilliantly as a gentle activity between more strenuous Highland walks. Kids find it mesmerising; adults appreciate the engineering audacity.
