Camela Wood

You'll find Camela Wood tucked away in the flat fenlands south of Goole, a proper pocket of ancient woodland that feels a world away from the surrounding agricultural landscape. It's not vast - you can walk through in under an hour - but it's genuinely worth the detour if you're staying in the area.

The wood itself is a mix of native broadleaves and older oaks, with a decent path network that winds between the trees. In spring the bluebells come thick on the ground, and it's the sort of place where you'll actually see wildlife rather than just hear it. Walkers get the most from it, particularly those heading south from Goole who don't expect much woodland in this part of Yorkshire. The flat terrain means it's manageable for families too, though there's bugger all facilities, so bring your own supplies.

The light filters through canopy in that way that makes you forget about the motorways and grid roads beyond. Come in late afternoon and you'll have the place to yourself. It's free to visit - no car park charge or entry fee - which is increasingly rare.

If you're camping at Apple Blossom just up the road, this makes an excellent evening walk before dinner. Don't expect manicured pathways or interpretation boards. This is a working woodland that happens to have public access, and that's precisely what makes it interesting. Worth an hour of your time, particularly if the weather's decent.
