Camp / embankment (on aerial)

You won't find much signage or fanfare at this Iron Age camp near Cranleigh - that's rather the point. What you're looking at, visible mainly from above or if you know where to stand, is an ancient defensive embankment that once enclosed a settlement dating back somewhere between 800 and 100 BC. The earthworks remain surprisingly legible if you walk the perimeter, though the site is tucked away enough that most locals walk past without realising what they're seeing.

This is archaeology for the patient types. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no reconstructed roundhouses. You get the land itself, overgrown in places, quiet, and genuinely remote-feeling despite being minutes from Cranleigh. History enthusiasts will find it rewarding - the spatial logic of the defences tells you something about how Iron Age communities thought about security and community. Families with young kids might find it underwhelming after twenty minutes; there's not a lot of drama to a grass-covered embankment.

Access appears unrestricted, though you'll want to check locally before visiting. Allow an hour to properly walk the site and take in the scale of it. Best tackled on foot from Cranleigh itself, or as part of a broader walking route through the Surrey countryside. If you're staying at one of the nearby farms - Riverside Farm or Sussex Topiary both sit within reasonable distance - this makes a worthwhile early-morning wander before heading elsewhere. Don't expect crowds or facilities. Do expect the genuine quiet of a landscape that's held its shape for nearly three thousand years.
