Campbellsfeu Wood

The walk through Campbellsfeu Wood feels like stepping into something properly wild without needing to hike for hours. Dense woodland just outside Tain in the Highlands, it's the sort of place where you actually feel removed from things - dark pines, forest floor soft with needles, the occasional crack of a branch underfoot. Not vast, but it rewards a slow wander.

This is walker territory, full stop. Families with restless toddlers might find it a bit samey after twenty minutes, but if your kids are old enough to appreciate being among actual trees without a visitor centre in sight, they'll get something genuine from it. You're looking at maybe an hour here, longer if you're the type to stop and stare at lichen.

There's no visitor infrastructure that I could find - no café, no information boards, no charge as far as I can tell. Bring a proper map or know what you're doing, because it's easy enough to lose your bearings among the conifers. Spring and early summer are cracking times, when the light filters through differently.

If you're staying at Dornoch Firth Caravan Park nearby, this makes a proper morning's outing before heading elsewhere. It's genuine Highland woodland without the Instagram crowds. Worth the detour if you're the sort who actually wants to walk among trees rather than just look at them from a car park.
