Campton Plantation

A proper woodland walk through mixed forest just outside Henlow - the kind of place where you can actually hear yourself think. Campton Plantation offers straightforward woodland trails through mature trees, nothing flashy but genuinely peaceful if you time it right.

The forest floor is thick with leaf litter, and in autumn the canopy turns into proper reds and golds. You'll find a decent network of paths criss-crossing through, though they're not signposted brilliantly so it helps to know where you're going. The walking is gentle enough for families with younger kids, though there's not much in the way of facilities or attractions within the woodland itself - this is about the trees and the quiet, not about playgrounds or tea shops.

Historically it's been managed woodland for centuries, which is worth knowing if you're interested in forestry, but don't come expecting interpretive signs or a visitor centre. This is one for people who actually want to walk in a forest rather than have a forest experience laid on for them.

If you're staying at Henlow Bridge Lakes - a solid lakeside park just 3.7 miles away - it makes an excellent morning or afternoon escape. You could easily spend two hours here without rushing. Best visited midweek if you can; weekends see a fair bit of traffic from the surrounding villages. Spring and autumn are nicer than high summer, when the path can get muddy and overgrown.
