The hall at Haddo House sits like a grand punctuation mark on the Aberdeenshire landscape, about twenty minutes south of Ellon. What you're actually walking into is one of Scotland's most imposing Georgian country houses, all symmetry and stone - the kind of place that makes you stand up a bit straighter just looking at it. The Canadian Hall itself is where things get interesting. It's essentially a purpose-built wing that houses an exceptional collection of Canadian art and artifacts, which feels oddly specific until you realise the original owners had deep ties to Canada. The whole setup works as a proper house museum, so you're wandering through period rooms alongside contemporary Canadian paintings and objects.

History enthusiasts will spend a solid two to three hours here picking through the layers - the architecture alone rewards close looking. Families with teenagers might find the art collection engaging, though younger children could grow restless unless they're already into grand houses. It's not the sort of place to bring a five-year-old and expect them to be thrilled for hours.

The grounds are handsome too, rolling away from the house in proper Aberdeenshire style. You could easily link this with a stay at Ythan Valley Campsite, just two miles off, and make a day of exploring both the house and the surrounding countryside.
