Canklow Woods

The woodland walks here feel properly removed from Sheffield's sprawl, even though you're only a few miles out. Canklow Woods is a straightforward nature reserve - no visitor centre, no cafe, just trees, paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place.

What you get is a decent network of walking trails through mixed woodland, the sort of place where you might spot woodland birds or stumble onto a clearing that actually feels like you've discovered something. It's not dramatic scenery - no viewpoints or dramatic drops - but that's rather the point. Families with younger kids will manage the terrain fine on the main paths; serious walkers might find it a bit modest compared to the moorland hikes the region offers, but it's perfect for a morning ramble when the weather's uncertain.

There's no entrance fee or gates to speak of, so you can turn up whenever suits you. Allow an hour or two depending on which loops you fancy. The reserve works brilliantly as a breather between staying at Hooton Lodge Farm or Waleswood Caravan & Camping Park - both within five miles - without needing to trek across the Peak District or tackle Rother Valley Country Park if you just want something gentle and close by.

Go early on a weekday if you want it to yourself. Weekends can get busier with dog walkers and families, which is fine, but the charm's in the solitude.
