Cannington Camp

The earthworks here are Roman, though what you're actually looking at is a jumble of grassy banks and ditches that demand a bit of imagination to decode. Cannington Camp sits just outside Bridgwater and dates back roughly two thousand years - it was a fort of some kind, military or trading post, and the locals have had the good sense to leave the bumps in the ground where they are rather than flatten them for housing.

You won't find much in the way of interpretation on site, so come prepared with either a good guidebook or the ability to enjoy earthworks for their own sake. The walk around takes twenty minutes, maybe half an hour if you're the type who stops to consider every contour. It's genuinely peaceful - proper Somerset countryside, with the feel of something genuinely old underfoot.

History enthusiasts will find it rewarding, particularly if you're the sort who gets a kick from reading the landscape itself. Families with young children might tire quickly unless the kids are keen on climbing banks and rolling down slopes. Walkers doing the broader Bridgwater area circuit will find it a worthwhile detour.

The site is free and accessible year-round, though you'll want to go in drier months - wet grass and steep slopes don't mix well. If you're based at Moorhouse Campsite to the south, you're only twenty minutes away. Mill Farm Caravan Park, closer at hand, makes a decent jumping-off point for exploring both Cannington and the broader Somerset Levels.
