Cannock Chase Country Park

Miles of heathland and forest sprawl across this former military training ground just outside Stafford, and it's the kind of place that rewards proper exploration rather than a quick lap. Cannock Chase Country Park isn't manicured - there's something genuinely wild about it, with sandy paths winding through pine plantations and open heath that feels properly remote despite being barely ten minutes from town.

Walkers will have the time of their lives here. The terrain varies enough to keep things interesting: some trails are flat and easy, others climb through dense woodland where the light gets filtered and green. Mountain bikers have claimed chunks of it too, so expect to share the paths on weekends. There's no entrance fee that I'm aware of, which is brilliant - you can rock up whenever and stay as long as you fancy. Two to three hours gives you a decent circuit, though you could easily lose a whole day if you're the type to wander.

For caravan holidays in the area, you're spoiled for choice. Chase Camping at Tackeroo and Chase Camping at Four Oaks Farm both sit within striking distance, or there's Chase Glamping Pods if you want something a step up from a tent. Spring Paddock and Silver Trees are equally close if you've got a motorhome.

Kids will manage it fine if they're the outdoor type - there's space to run and things to find - but don't expect facilities or playgrounds. The real appeal is the walking, the views across the Midlands on clear days, and that feeling of having escaped somewhere genuine.
