Capel Peniel

Small white chapel, proper rural Anglesey. It's the sort of place you stumble upon rather than plan for - sitting quietly off the road between Beaumaris and the quieter inland villages. Capel Peniel is a working Methodist chapel, and while it won't take you long to walk around it, there's something genuinely peaceful about these modest churches when you catch them empty or at rest.

Inside, it's whitewashed simplicity - wooden pews, minimal decoration, the kind of austere beauty that goes with Welsh Nonconformism. There's no visitor centre, no gift shop, no faffing about. If you're driving past between Beaumaris and the coastal parks, you might as well pull in. Takes ten minutes, costs nothing as far as I can tell, and it's a proper dose of old Wales without the tourist machinery.

It works best as a diversion rather than a destination. Walkers exploring the lanes inland from Anglesey Sea Breeze Park or heading toward Penmon could easily incorporate it. Families staying at any of the nearby caravan parks won't find it gripping for long - kids will be bored in minutes - but it's the sort of thing that rounds out a day of beach and cream teas. The real appeal is architectural and historical, so if you're interested in how Welsh communities worshipped, it's worth five minutes of your time. Best visited during daylight hours given the rural location, and there's no parking to speak of, so leave space on the verge if you visit.
