Careg Pumsaint

Five stones standing in a field near Llandeilo - that's Careg Pumsaint, and honestly, it's one of those archaeological sites that rewards a bit of effort to find. The Bronze Age burial cairn sits in rural Carmarthenshire, far enough off the beaten track that you won't stumble into crowds of coach parties.

What you're looking at is essentially what's left of a ceremonial site from thousands of years ago. The stones themselves aren't towering megalithic monuments - they're modest, weathered, and sit among farmland that looks much as it probably has for centuries. There's something rather moving about that. You stand there, imagining what rituals took place, who was buried here, and the landscape has shifted so little that you can almost feel the continuity.

This is proper stuff for history enthusiasts and archaeology types who don't need everything signposted and gift-wrapped. Walkers exploring the Carmarthenshire countryside will find it worth the detour. Kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless you've primed them with some Bronze Age context beforehand - the impact is more atmospheric than visually dramatic.

There's no visitor centre, no admission charge as far as I can tell, and no set opening hours - it's essentially an open-air site you can visit anytime. Allow 20 minutes unless you're genuinely interested in the archaeology, in which case bring a book on Bronze Age Wales. If you're based at Glynmarch Farm Camping nearby, it's a short drive, and combines well with exploring Llandeilo itself and the wider Tywi Valley.
