Carlingford Lough Greenway

The Carlingford Lough Greenway is a 10-kilometre cycling and walking route that hugs the water's edge between Newry and Warrenpoint, offering one of the best low-effort ways to see this corner of County Down. You're basically following an old railway line that's been converted into a proper smooth path, so there's no huffing and puffing required - even younger kids can manage it without complaint.

What makes it special isn't just the walking itself. The lough opens up on one side, giving you views across to the Cooley Peninsula in the Republic. On a clear day you can see right across to the Mourne Mountains in the distance. The route passes through a handful of small villages and woodland sections, so it's varied enough that you won't get bored halfway through.

The whole thing is free and accessible year-round. Allow two to three hours if you're dawdling and stopping for photos - longer if you're with children. It's ideal for families or anyone who wants a proper walk without scrambling up hillsides. History types will appreciate the industrial heritage of the old railway.

If you're based at Kilbroney Caravan Park just up the road, this is an obvious choice for a morning out. You can tackle it either direction from Newry, and there's decent parking near the trailhead. Spring and early autumn are probably best - less rain than winter, less crowded than summer peak.
