Carlisle Wood

Walking into Carlisle Wood feels like stepping back from Nottingham's sprawl into something properly old. Ancient oaks tower overhead, their trunks thick enough to anchor centuries of local history. The woodland floor is soft underfoot, carpeted with leaf litter and moss that looks almost prehistoric.

It's a straightforward woodland walk rather than a destination with bells and whistles. You'll find quiet paths threading between the trees, the kind of place where you might spot a kestrel or hear woodpeckers at work. The canopy is dense enough that it feels world-away from the city, though you're barely twenty minutes' drive out.

Families with younger kids might manage an hour here comfortably. Serious walkers will push further if they venture into adjacent woodland. History buffs should know this is old forest, the sort that's probably been here since medieval times when Sherwood wasn't far off.

There's nothing to pay for, no facilities to speak of, and no specific opening times - it's just there. Summer's the best bet, when the green is thick and light filters through nicely. Winter can be muddy and gloomy. If you're camped at Janson Fishery just down the road, it's an easy morning outing to break up the site routine. Worth bringing good boots and not expecting manicured paths - this is proper woodland, left to get on with things.
