Carmel National Nature Reserve

The Carmarthenshire moorlands roll on for miles up here, and Carmel National Nature Reserve sits right in the thick of it - a proper expanse of upland habitat that rewards walkers willing to leave the car parks behind. This isn't a manicured visitor attraction with tea rooms and interpretation boards. It's wild grassland, heathland, and bog, the sort of place where you're likely to spot red grouse, ring ouzels, and if you're lucky enough, a merlin cutting across the ridge.

Walkers will find this genuinely worthwhile. The reserve itself is free to explore, and the terrain is manageable if you're reasonably fit - paths thread across the moorland without demanding technical scrambling. Allow a couple of hours minimum if you want to actually see something rather than just tick a box. Spring and early summer are best when the nesting birds are active and the light lingers long enough to justify the drive out from Swansea.

Stay at one of the nearby glamping spots - Route 47 or Gelli Glamping are only four or five miles away - and you've got a genuine escape hatch from the coast. Combine this with a visit to the lower Towy Valley walks, and you've got a solid few days of proper Welsh countryside without fighting crowds. It's not Instagram-friendly, and that's precisely the point.
