Carriston Reservoir

The water at Carriston Reservoir sits quietly on the edge of Glenrothes, doing what reservoirs do best - providing a bit of breathing room in a town that doesn't get nearly enough of them. It's the kind of place you stumble upon rather than plan around, though that's rather its appeal.

There's a decent walk to be had here, with a path that loops the perimeter and gives you proper views across the water. On a clear day you can actually see where you're going, which sounds obvious but matters when you're trudging around Fife in November. Birdwatchers will get something out of it - the usual suspects turn up, nothing exotic but genuine all the same. Families with young kids might manage twenty minutes before the walking gets tedious, but walkers who've got a solid hour to spare will find it worth the trip.

It's free, obviously. No visitor centre nonsense, just you and the water. Handy if you're staying at one of the nearby caravan parks - Letham Feus Lodge is barely three kilometres away, and Wigwam Holidays Montrave is just across from that. Decent for a morning outing before breakfast or a late afternoon loop when the light's decent.

Don't expect drama. The reservoir isn't going to change your life, but it will give you somewhere honest to walk and a chance to clear your head. For a Fife holiday, that's exactly what you need.
