Carsegowan Moss Scottish Wildlife Trust

Carsegowan Moss is a sprawling peatland reserve run by the Scottish Wildlife Trust, about five miles from Newton Stewart. It's the sort of place that doesn't photograph as dramatically as a mountain or a loch, but rewards proper attention. Walking the boardwalks through open bog, you're moving through habitat that's genuinely rare - sphagnum moss, sundews, and the chance of spotting hen harriers or adders if you're patient and quiet.

The reserve works best for wildlife enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than families after a quick half-hour stroll. Children might find it dull unless they're the type interested in bog plants and bird spotting. Most people spend two to three hours here, depending on how many of the trails you tackle. The going's straightforward but can be boggy underfoot, so proper boots matter.

Access is free and unrestricted, which is generous. Best visited in spring or early summer when the plant life is most active and migratory birds are around. Winter's bleak and rather sodden. It's a genuine working conservation area, not a polished visitor attraction with a cafe.
