Carsluchie Wood

The walk through Carsluchie Wood near Midmar is genuinely rewarding if you've got an afternoon to kill and you're already in Aberdeenshire. It's proper woodland - tall conifers mixed with native broadleaves, damp underfoot even when it hasn't rained, and quiet enough that you'll actually hear birds instead of your own breathing echoing back at you.

There are decent trails that loop through without being overly signposted, which means you need a modicum of navigation sense or you'll end up backtracking. The forest floor's thick with moss and fallen needles, and in autumn the light filters through in that particular golden way that makes you understand why people bang on about Scottish highlands. It's not dramatic - you won't get views that make you gasp - but it's the kind of place where an hour dissolves into two and you suddenly remember why walking in woods beats staring at screens.

Walkers will find it decent. Families with younger kids might get restless after the first circuit unless they're the type who spot every beetle and tree stump. Dog owners absolutely thrive here. You're looking at allowing a solid couple of hours for a proper explore without rushing.
