Cassie's Wood

Twenty minutes outside Carlisle, Cassie's Wood is one of those reserves that doesn't announce itself loudly but rewards a proper exploration. It's a mix of ancient woodland and open grassland, the sort of place where you'll spot woodland birds if you're patient enough to stop and actually listen rather than trudge straight through.

The main draw here is the walking. Paths wind through the trees and out across quieter sections where the light filters through nicely - decent for photography if you're into that sort of thing, though bring waterproofs. The woodland floor gets boggy after rain, which is either annoying or atmospheric depending on your mood.

Families with older children will get more from it than those with toddlers. There's no café, no visitor centre, no facilities to speak of. It's genuinely low-key, which some will love and others will find a bit thin. Allow a couple of hours if you're taking your time; you can knock it over in forty minutes if you're just after a brisk walk.

If you're based at High Hall Farm Campsite just down the road, it's a cracking option for a morning before heading into Carlisle proper. Drybeck Farm and Eden Valley Glamping are both close enough too - the reserve works well as part of a broader Cumbrian week rather than a destination in itself. Go for the peace and quiet, not expecting manicured trails or viewpoint benches.
