Castell Ewloe

The ruins of a 13th-century castle sit hidden in woodland just outside Mold, roughly twenty minutes from Chester. What you're looking at are two towers connected by a crumbling wall - not a complete fortress, but substantial enough to give you a genuine sense of medieval solidity. The stone still feels solid underfoot, and walking the perimeter takes maybe fifteen minutes unless you're the type who sits and sketches for hours.

This one's best for people who actually care about medieval Welsh history rather than those expecting a showpiece ruin. You won't find gift shops or crowds. The approach involves a short walk through proper woodland - muddy in winter, pleasant in summer - and there's no formal visitor centre or facilities to speak of. It's free to visit and accessible most of the time, though the site can get waterlogged after heavy rain.

It works well as part of a wider Flintshire loop if you're staying at one of the nearby glamping sites like Honeypot Hideaways or Willow Farm. The Mold area has enough castles and medieval sites scattered about that you could spend a full day hopping between them. The location also puts you within striking distance of Chester's walls and the broader North Wales landscape without being remote enough to feel properly cut off.

Kids aged eight and up might find it interesting. Younger ones will tire of it quickly - there's not much to do beyond clamber and explore. Allow half an hour total if you're just passing through.
