Castell Faen Grach

The remains of Castell Faen Grach sit on high ground just outside Aberystwyth, a low stone fort that's been weathered by centuries of Welsh wind and rain. There's not much left standing - you're looking at scattered stone walls and earthwork banks rather than anything resembling a keep or tower - but that's part of the appeal. What you get is a genuine sense of place without the crowds that swamp the big medieval castles.

This is proper walking country. The approach rewards you with views back towards Aberystwyth and the surrounding farmland, which alone makes the trek worthwhile. History types will appreciate its Iron Age origins, though the site's been modified and reused enough times that sorting out what belongs to which era takes some effort. Don't expect interpretation boards or facilities - this is a find-your-own-way kind of spot.

Walkers and landscape photographers will get the most from it. Kids might lose interest quickly unless they're the type who enjoy building stories around stones. Allow an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're taking photos or sitting about. It's free, naturally, being little more than an archaeological site with no formal management.
