Castell Llanhuadain

Standing stones and earthwork banks are about all that remain of this 12th-century Norman castle, but what it lacks in dramatic ruins it makes up for in peace and solitude. The site sits on a natural mound overlooking the Pembrokeshire countryside, just a short drive from Narberth, and you'll likely have the place entirely to yourself. That's either wonderfully atmospheric or slightly disappointing, depending on what you're after.

History enthusiasts will appreciate the strategic position - you can see why the Normans chose this spot to keep watch over the surrounding valleys. The defensive earthworks are still clearly visible, and there's enough left to spark the imagination about how this fortress once controlled the local area.

Families might find it a bit thin on spectacle, especially if the kids are expecting towering walls and dungeons. It's more of a contemplative stop than an adventure playground, perfect for a quick detour rather than a destination in itself. Allow thirty minutes at most unless you're particularly keen on medieval earthworks.

Getting there involves a pleasant walk across farmland, though the path isn't always obvious. If you're staying at Bluestone Resort or one of the other nearby parks, it makes for a decent morning constitutional before heading to more substantial attractions like Pembroke Castle.
