Castle Hill

Standing on this grassy mound near Galowras, you're looking at the remains of what was once an Iron Age hillfort. The earthwork ramparts are still clearly visible, snaking around the hilltop in concentric rings that would have protected the settlement within. It's not dramatic like Tintagel, but there's something quietly compelling about walking these ancient boundaries.

Archaeology enthusiasts will appreciate the well-preserved defensive ditches and the commanding views across the surrounding countryside. The site gives you a proper sense of how our ancestors chose their defensive positions - this hill offers excellent sightlines in all directions. Families might find it a bit lacking unless the kids are into history, as there's not much beyond the earthworks themselves.

The walk up is gentle enough for most ages, and it's free to explore whenever you fancy it. Allow about an hour if you want to walk the full circuit of the ramparts and soak up the views. On a clear day, you can see right across to the coast.

It works well as part of a Cornish holiday based at nearby parks like Pentewan Sands or Heligan Caravan and Camping. The site is close enough to several holiday parks that it makes for an easy morning's exploration before heading to the beach or other attractions. Just don't expect visitor facilities - bring water and wear decent walking shoes.
