Castle Hill

The walk up Castle Hill from Folkestone is steep, honest, but the payoff is proper views across the Channel if the weather's on your side. You're climbing to an Iron Age fort - the earthworks are still visible, bumpy ridges in the grass that tell you something significant happened here once. It's not dramatic like you might expect; there's no castle, no ruins to poke about in, just the outline of ancient defensive ditches and the knowledge that people stood here two thousand years ago watching the same stretch of sea.

Walkers will get the most from this one. It's maybe forty minutes up from Folkestone town, depending on your fitness and how many times you stop to catch your breath. The path isn't maintained like a tourist trail - it's working farmland up there, so bring decent boots and check the weather properly. Clear days are everything; on a grey Kent morning it's just a field on a hill.

Families with older kids might manage it, but younger ones will complain about the gradient. There's nothing to do once you reach the top except eat a sandwich and admire the vista, which is fine for some and boring for others.
