Castle Hill, Motte

You won't find much more than an overgrown mound in a field near Drumoak, but that's rather the point. Castle Hill, a Norman motte, sits quietly on the Aberdeenshire landscape - the kind of archaeological site that rewards curiosity more than casual passing. From the top, on a clear day, you get decent views across Deeside, and the walk up takes roughly five minutes if you're reasonably fit.

It's genuinely worth stopping if you're into medieval fortifications or Scottish history. The motte dates back centuries, and standing there gives you a real sense of how the Norman conquerors controlled the landscape through positioning and height advantage. Kids aged eight and upwards will probably find it interesting enough, though they won't spend more than twenty minutes here unless they're keen on castles and archaeology.

The site is free and accessible year-round - no gates, no fees, just find your way in from the nearby road. Early summer's best when the grass is cut and visibility proper. Spring and autumn work fine too, though autumn's wetter underfoot.

If you're based at Silverbank or Deeside Holiday Park, both within five miles, Castle Hill makes a decent morning walk before heading elsewhere. Banchory Lodge is slightly further but equally convenient. It won't dominate your itinerary, but paired with a wander around Drumoak or a drive along Deeside, it fits perfectly into a relaxed park-based break. Don't expect facilities - bring a packed lunch if you want to linger.
