Castle Hill Motte & Baileys

The earthworks at Castle Hill are what remain of a Norman motte and bailey - basically a raised mound topped with a wooden fortress, surrounded by a defensive ditch. You're looking at proper medieval engineering here, even if all that's left now is the geography of it. It's free to visit and takes about twenty minutes to have a proper look around, though you'll want longer if you're the type to sit and imagine what stood there eight hundred years ago.

Market Harborough is just down the road, which makes this a decent leg-stretcher if you're based in town. The site itself isn't flashy - there's no visitor centre, no interpretation boards to speak of, just the bones of the thing. That's actually quite nice. History buffs and archaeology types will get more from it than families with small kids, though clambering up the mound keeps most children entertained for a bit. The walk itself is manageable, nothing taxing.

Don't go expecting a grand day out. Go because you're interested in how Norman lords established themselves, or because you enjoy reading the landscape.
