Castle Hill, Motte

The mound rises abruptly from the surrounding landscape like something left behind by a giant - which, in a way, it was. Castle Hill is a proper Norman motte, one of those earth-and-timber fortifications the Normans plonked all over Scotland after 1066, and this one near Balloch remains surprisingly intact for something over nine centuries old.

What you get is essentially a walk up a steep, grassy hillock with commanding views across Renfrewshire. There's no castle sitting on top, no stone walls - just the earthwork itself and the sense of standing where medieval lords once stood, looking out across their lands. On a clear day you can see why they chose this spot. The climb takes ten minutes, fifteen if you're leisurely about it.

This is one for the history-minded rather than the Instagram crowd. Kids might manage the scramble up, but there's not much to hold their attention once they're at the summit unless they're genuinely interested in medieval fortifications. Adults who enjoy walking and a bit of archaeological context will find it worthwhile - it's the sort of place that rewards a bit of research beforehand so you're not just looking at a lump of earth.

It's free and accessible year-round, which is the main selling point. If you're staying at The Pods at Auchenhean, it's barely six miles away and makes for a decent half-hour detour on a park day. Not spectacular, but solid if you're into this sort of thing.
