Castle Hill

The walk up Castle Hill rewards you with proper views across Tenby and the Pembrokeshire coast - though I'd be misleading you if I called it a difficult climb. It's a nature reserve that's more about the vantage point than any dramatic landscape feature. The hill itself rises above the town and gives you sight lines down to North Beach and across the bay, which on a clear day is genuinely worth the twenty-minute hike from the town centre.

What you're actually doing is walking through coastal grassland dotted with wildflowers depending on the season. There's an old fort up there - earthworks rather than anything you'd call a castle, which explains the slightly confusing name. History buffs might find it mildly interesting; kids will find it less so unless they're into scrambling about on uneven ground. The real appeal is the view and the fresh air, particularly for walkers staying at Saltern Holiday Park or Haven Kiln Park just outside Tenby.

Free access, no time limit to speak of - you can spend an hour up there or twenty minutes if you're just grabbing the photo. Best visited when it's not windy enough to knock you sideways, and avoid peak summer when Tenby's heaving with day-trippers. The path gets muddy after rain, so sensible shoes are non-negotiable. If you're basing yourself at one of the nearby caravan parks - Florence Springs or Sunnyvale are larger options - this makes a decent half-morning outing paired with a proper walk along the coastal path.
