Castle Rising

The moment you round the bend near Sandringham and see Castle Rising looming across the Norfolk flatlands, you understand why it's survived nearly 900 years. This isn't some crumbling ruin - it's a proper Norman keep, standing four storeys tall with walls thick enough to stop you wondering why it's still here.

You walk across the outer earthwork and suddenly the scale hits you. The keep dominates everything around it, and climbing the stone stairs to the top rewards you with views across the marshes that stretch toward the coast. The interior is largely shell now, but the architecture speaks volumes - those Romanesque arches, the way light falls through the arrow slits. History types will spend a solid couple of hours picking apart the detail; families with younger kids might manage 45 minutes before the novelty of climbing stone staircases wears thin.

There's a decent tearoom in the grounds, and admission won't break the bank. It's about two miles from Sandringham town, making it an easy afternoon stop between the wider Norfolk parks dotted around the area - Sandringham Camping and Caravanning Club Site sits just down the road if you're caravan camping. The site itself is open year-round, though autumn and spring bring the best light for photography and fewer school groups clogging the spiral stairs.

Worth the detour? Absolutely, if you're serious about Norman architecture and don't mind a bit of wind exposure. Skip it if you're after theme park thrills.
