Castle Wood

Castle Wood sits just inland from Watchet, a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You're walking through dense Somerset woodland here - the sort of place where you need decent boots and won't find a gift shop at the end of it. The trees are substantial, the paths wind through quietly, and there's a genuine sense of going somewhere rather than ticking off a postcard view.

Historically this was part of the old hunting grounds, and you can still feel that sense of established landscape as you move through. It's the kind of place where you'll actually see wildlife if you're patient - deer aren't uncommon, and the bird life is solid year-round. The canopy is thick enough that even on wet days it stays reasonably walkable, though the ground gets boggy after heavy rain.

Walkers will find this properly rewarding. It's not a quick thirty-minute loop - you can easily spend two or three hours here depending on which paths you take. Families with younger kids might find it a bit samey after an hour, but teenagers who like actual nature rather than playground equipment will rate it. There's nothing laid on - no facilities, no marked routes - so bring a map or download something beforehand.

Stay at Haven Doniford Bay or Warren Bay Village nearby and this makes a solid morning's walk before lunch in Watchet. It's real enough to feel like an actual outing, not another themed experience.
